Rice Tops East Carolina in Game 3

HOUSTON, Texas – Rice scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, which was highlighted by Andrew Dunlap’s solo home run as the Owls took game three and the series against No. 16 East Carolina Sunday afternoon 4-1 at Reckling Park. With the win the Owls improve to 8-7 on the season, while the Pirates fall to 11-5.

Ricardo Salinas (1-1) picked up the series win working a career-best eight innings surrendering one run (earned) on five hits with a walk and six punch outs, which tied his career-high. Jackson Parthasarthy notched his second save of the year tossing a perfect ninth inning.

Joe Ingle (2-2) suffered the loss allowing three runs (all earned) issuing a pair of walks and hitting a batter without recording an out. Jimmy Boyd tossed a career-high 7.1 innings allowing one run (earned) on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Nick Durazo worked two-thirds of an inning allowing a hit.

Rice out hit ECU on the day 6-5 getting two base knocks from Ryan Chandler and Domonic DiCaprio. Five different Pirates tallied one hit in the game and Travis Watkins drove in the lone run.

How It Happened:Rice scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning taking a 4-1 lead. The four-run frame was highlighted by Dunlap’s first career home run, which tied the game at one-all. After ECU made a pitching change to bring in Ingle, the right hander walked Charlie Warren and Chandler before hitting Grayson Lewis to load the bases. Ford Proctor welcomed Durazo to the game with a three-RBI triple to left center accounting for the final three runs of the inning.

ECU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on Watkins’ RBI single. Charlie Yorgen singled up the middle to start the frame, took second on a Salinas balk and came around to score on Watkins’ base hit back up the middle.

Up Next:ECU returns home Tuesday, Mar. 15 when it plays host to in-state foe No. 6 North Carolina at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (ET).
