Pirates Win 3-2 to Sweep UConn

STORRS, Conn. – Jacob Wolfe tossed his first career complete game registering a career-high nine strikeouts, while Dwanya Williams-Sutton belted a three-run home run helping No. 24 East Carolina to a 3-2 win over UCONN Sunday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field. With the win the Pirates complete their first sweep of the American Athletic Conference season and improve to 30-16-1 and 11-6-1, while the Huskies fall to 24-22 and 8-9 in league play.

Wolfe (6-3) allowed two runs (both earned) on four hits while striking out nine batters and walking two. The lefty registered at least one punch out in the first five innings and had multiple punch outs in the first, second and fourth innings.

CJ Dandeneau (1-1) took the loss surrendering two runs (both earned) on two hits. Starter William Montgomerie tossed six shutout innings scattering five hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts before turning the ball over to the bullpen. Patrick Ruotolo was touched for a run (earned) on one hit in 1.2 innings.

Williams-Sutton and Travis Watkins each recorded a pair of hits with Williams-Sutton’s three-run blast in the eighth accounting for all of ECU’s runs.

UCONN tallied four hits on the day with Willy Yahn collecting a pair. Bryan Daniello and Tyler Gnesda each drove in a run – both of which came in the ninth inning.

How It Happened: Williams-Sutton broke a scoreless tie in the eighth blasting his fourth homer of the season for a 3-0 ECU lead. Watkins and Brooks laced consecutive one-out singles before UCONN brought in Ruotolo to face Williams-Sutton. The freshman greeted Ruotolo with a three-run shot to left center – his second in as many days.

UCONN scratched a pair of runs across late in the ninth frame to pull within one, 3-2. Yahn and Joe DeRoche-Duffin roped consecutive singles to start the ninth. Yahn took third on a wild pitch and came home on Daniello’s RBI fielder’s choice. With Daniello standing on second, Gnesda singled to center field pushing across Daniello for the game’s final run.

Up Next: ECU will conclude its four game road trip next week when it travels to instate rival North Carolina on Tuesday, May 10 at Boshamer Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. (ET).
