East Carolina’s regional championship baseball team returned home to Greenville Monday afternoon after a successful three day trip to Charlotesville, Virginia where the team punched their ticket to the Super Regionals coming up this weekend in Lubbock, Texas.

The Pirates moved to 37-21-1 after Eric Tyler, Charlie Yorgan and regional most valuable player Travis Watkins knocked home runs in ECU’s 8-4 Sunday win over William & Mary after beating Virginia on a Watkins walk-off homer on Saturday to advance to the regional title game.

Second year ECU head coach Cliff Godwin commented about the experience of winning a regional with the defending national champs hosting.

“Moments like this you take with you and put it in your back pocket because it’s pretty special,” Godwin told PirateIllustrated.com, “The guys played their butts off this weekend. Travis’ walk-off home run is number one in my coaching career. You know I’ve had some pretty cool moments in my career but for Travis, you’re team captain to hit a three-run walk off jack against the defending national champions that’s pretty cool. Even yesterday is cooler because now we’re regional champs.”

Charlottesville regional MVP Travis Watkins is still excited for his team and he talked about it for PI-TV.

“It was a big win in Charlottesville and we’re glad to be back and get prepared for this super regional,” Watkins stated on Monday afternoon.

Watkins was asked if he thinks this ECU team is playing it’s best baseball right now.

“I think so. We didn’t have a good showing in the conference tournament, but we got rest and we got back to our basics which is playing hard, toughness and focusing on the process and it really showed up there and we’re playing our best baseball at the right time."
